"wish you were gay" is a single by Billie Eilish from her debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?. It was released as a single on March 4th 2019. It was first performed during one of her Instagram livestreams.
Background[]
Billie wrote the song with Finneas when she was 14. According to her, it's meant to be a "fun and playful way of dealing with rejection".[1] Even though Eilish has expressed her love for the LGBT+ community and stated that the song is not meant to be offensive towards gay people in any way, shape or form[2], the song still caused controversy and faced backlash from the LGBT+ community.

When talking about the song, Billie said, "'wish you were gay' is about wanting to be with someone so bad that it hurts, and not wanting to accept that this person doesn't want you in return. At least if they were gay, I'd have a valid reason for their rejection and lack of interest in being with me".[1]
